Giving Old Bike Tubes a New Reputation
Moab Bag Company was founded in March 2013 with the goal of creating practical goods from an underutilized local resource. All of our products are handmade in Moab, Utah from recycled bike tubes.
Soon after moving to Moab, I bought a sewing machine at a yard sale, hoping that the creative itch I had been unable to scratch for years due to a very nomadic lifestyle would be soothed. After a few simple projects, I realized I needed something more challenging, so a friend suggested bags. Bike tubes came into the conversation, and before I knew it, I was hawking my wares around town and online. It's only grown from there.
In my perfect world, there would be no bike tubes getting dumped in landfills! Until then, I want the world to recognize what a valuable material bike tube rubber is, even after it no longer fulfills its primary purpose.
I want to translate bike tube rubber's obvious qualities into the bags I make: durability, flexibility, strength; while at the same time highlighting its more subtle properties: versatility, suppleness, ease of care. All while maintaining its clean, simple lines.
Attention to Detail
I'm a big fan of those little details, those things that let you know a maker has really thought a product through. I pay a lot of attention to these things, so I can be confident in the quality and uniqueness of the products that I offer.
All of Moab Bag Company's products are handmade by me, Brandy, in my workshop in Moab, Utah. I share a beautiful space that once housed an art gallery with three other creative minds, and thankfully they don't mind my piles of bike tubes! In my corner you can find boxes of prepped tubes, multiple sewing machines, sometimes a dog, and all the notions and tools I need for bag making. Oh, and don't forget the coffee.
